The Best Staircases for Small Spaces

When considering a staircase for your home, you have many options to choose from, but not all homes are created equal. If you have a smaller home, then you might have to consider a special staircase that will fit in a tighter spot. Thankfully, there are several types of staircases you can install into your small space.

Spiral StaircasesThe Best Staircases for Small Spaces

Spiral staircases can save space and look good while doing it. Those who are really pressed for space can have a staircase that can take as little as 3.5 square feet of space. They can also be made from a variety of materials, meaning they can be made to fit just about any home layout.

Floating Stairs

Floating stairs, or open risers, provide a great modern look and they don’t require much space to do it. Floating stairs have steps that are attached to the wall on one side, giving off a striking appearance that is also ideal for little spaces. Like the spiral option, floating stairs can be made from a variety of materials, and although each stair has a minimum width of 36 inches, they can be made smaller to meet your needs.

Ship Ladders

For those really tight spaces, ship ladders are best. Because they’re built at a sharp angle, they’re slim but still easy to use. They may be a struggle for toddlers and young children, but they are still a perfectly suitable option for a home tight on space such as an attic or loft. In many cases, a ship ladder has a riser height between 9″ to 11″ and a tread run between 4″ to 6″.
