Whether you have just moved into a new home, are looking to make some changes to your current home’s style or are thinking about installing a new staircase, you have probably wondered what stair treatment will work best for you and your family.
Figure out if bare wood, carpeting or a runner is best for you with some advice from Acadia Stairs:
Bare Wood Staircase
Hardwood floors are absolutely beautiful, and if yours have been cared for properly throughout the years, we love the idea of showing them off! An attractive option if the flooring below the stairs is also hardwood, this will create continuity as your eyes look up towards the ceiling and the second floor.
Bare wood floors are easy to clean, and although parents with young children often worry that they get slippery, an anti-skid spray can be applied to prevent falls. The spray goes on clear and can be touched up if it starts to wear away.
Another option we love, especially for businesses and exterior applications, is adding metal tread to wood stairs for a modern look and anti-skid grip.
Not sure if you like the look of bare wood stairs heading all the way up to a carpeted second floor? If you have a switchback landing, you can switch from hardwood to carpeting there, leaving the landing bare and the steps above it carpeted to match the second story’s floor.
Carpeted Staircases and Runners
Often used in homes with young families and elderly individuals, carpeted stairs and runners are especially beneficial for older dogs, individuals with knee trouble and young children who are always slipping and sliding on hardwood floors. Just keep in mind that a carpet can wear out with frequent use and may look dated after a few years.
Also, there is extra maintenance involved with carpeted stairs, since mold and mildew can get trapped within carpets and they can fray with age, becoming a tripping hazard.
