How to Decorate Your Staircase for the Holidays

The holidays are almost upon us. So, while you’re decorating your home for the holidays, don’t forget to decorate your staircase too! A well-decorated staircase can create a welcoming atmosphere for all of the guests you’ll be inviting over for the next two months.

But how, exactly, should you decorate your stairs? It’s up to you, ultimately, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

Use garland

Garland is a classic Christmas decoration that can be used anywhere in the house. It looks especially attractive wrapped around the railings of your staircase. While some simple garland will do, you can also add some lights or ornaments to have something that will really pop. Just don’t wrap the garland too tightly around your railings so that people can still grip onto them if they need to.

String down some lights

We mentioned pairing your lights with your garland, but lights also look attractive on their own. You can wrap them around your railing or have them hang down like a waterfall of lights. Both multi-colored and single-colored lights will look good here, so just use whatever you like the most!

Light the way with candles

The warm, relaxing glow of candles is great any time of the year, but especially during the holidays. You can place them on your steps to create a light-filled path up to your second floor. We don’t recommend using real candles—it’s all too easy for someone to accidently kick one over. Instead, opt for flameless candles.

Place some poinsettias

Finally, poinsettias are the quintessential holiday flower. Placing a few of these on your staircase’s steps alongside some lights or garland will create a beautiful holiday look. You can get real poinsettias, but if you don’t have a green thumb, fake ones are fine too.
