Glass Spiral Staircase Wows at Apple Shibuya

Tokyo Japan at DuskAt Acadia Stairs, we’re always looking for the “next big thing” when it comes to staircase design. Our blog showcases staircase designs from all over the world, from Europe to Southeast Asia. We enjoy highlighting what a stair can be from simple designs to intricate creations.

Today, Acadia Stairs is highlighting one of the latest trending staircases: the glass spiral staircase at Apple Shibuya. Apple has always been at the forefront of design; Apple stores have become a hallmark of American culture because of their aesthetic appeal.

A recent Apple store in Shibuya, Tokyo added a glass spiral staircase following a redesign that takes customers through the bright, white tech hub.

The curved structure allows visitors to ascend or descend in a structured format and mirrors staircases that were constructed at other Apple stores in Kyoto and London. The big difference here is the material: the stone itself—which is terrazzo—varies from those staircases. Nonetheless, the latest spiral staircases fit right into Apple’s style of going above and beyond when it comes to design.

The original staircase in the building was also spiral, but as you can see here, the steps were made of glass. The new design will remove those steps and replace them with the tile mentioned. However, the arm rails will remain outfitted with glass and lead into a tiled entryway at both the top and bottom.

The staircase not only demonstrates the power of a staircase design but also shows the potential of what a staircase can do for companies and consumers. We love to see companies really pushing the benchmark of what their stores can look like, although Apple has never failed in this regard. Looking forward to seeing what they have in store next.
